Take Me to Your Leader

“Oh, I’m not a leader.”

Oh yeah? Think again. Of course you are. Even if you’re only leading yourself — into a more satisfying life, business or career — you are a leader.

The question is, are you a good leader?

No one just IS a good leader, they become one. By definition, that requires change. And it requires a proactive approach.

Leaders in training continually observe, question, try, fail, tweak and try again. And they gain confidence by building on success and taking notes on what hasn’t worked.

If you want to become a good leader – especially when it comes to leading yourself effectively – get proactive:

  1. Be curious. Take a good long look around. What do you notice? Other people’s approach, other perspectives, new ideas… Take some notes.
  2. Ask questions. Allow your curiosity to germinate questions. High school is over, no one is going to spoon feed you. Asking is the only way to learn. Take some notes.
  3. Get help. Do you really think you can know it all? Do you really think you’re supposed to? Get over it. Get the Coles Notes (CliffsNotes for our American friends) from an expert. Take some notes.
  4. Give yourself some credit. You’ve got way more potential than you are acknowledging, I guarantee it. Quit doubting and start trusting yourself to figure it out. Make some notes.

If you’ve been letting any old hack lead you through life, now is the time to take back the reins. You are your own best leader and counsel, figure out how to do the best job you can.
