Happy in the Midst of Chaos

The “festive holiday season” doesn’t seem very aptly named these days, given the rate of stress many people experience as activities, expectations and time constraints collide with particular enthusiasm.

I’m in the midst of reading Think or Sink by Gina Mollicone-Long, speaker at our most recent Ladies Who Launch breakfast event in late November and it’s full of practical information on how to shift from stress into happier ways of being.

I’m not much of a morning person, so I completely understand if you didn’t join us to hear Gina speak because of the ungodly hour. I understand, but I also truly regret that you weren’t there to share in the experience.

Gina gave us a sneak peak of some of the highlights of her new book, which will be available in stores in January (pre-order before it’s released and get a smokin’ deal). Everyone came away from breakfast feeling good and with practical exercises on how to shift their thinking from stress to joy.

As I read the book, a couple of key ideas grabbed me as particularly applicable for entrepreneurs, regardless of your stage of business development.

It Always Starts With a Dream

First, everything you see around you was once just an idea in someone’s mind before it became a reality, a tangible thing. The computer you are reading this newsletter on, the double, non-fat latte you’re sipping, the brand name shoes on your feet. Someone first had to dream it, only then could they do it.

As an entrepreneur you may be intimidated or unsure of yourself at times, but you can also take comfort in the guarantee that everyone who has succeeded has also felt that way at one time or another. They felt that way, and still they succeeded. Take a look around at others’ realized dreams, marvel at what you see, and begin taking steps to make the your dream a reality.

One of those steps is examining what you think, and exploring how that may be getting in the way of your success.

Fear Short-Circuits Creativity

The second idea that struck me is how much damage fear does. I don’t just mean how it stops us from taking action. Fear actually limits our brain’s ability to think creatively! When our frame of mind is one of being stressed, our brain and body physically reacts by limiting our function to survival mode only. This narrows our brain’s focus and prevents us from seeing the big picture or coming up with new ways to solve problems and find solutions.

The only way to expand and access our full creativity is to shift our thinking and alleviate the biological stress response. The beauty is, we DO have the power to become more conscious and choose a new way to think about the circumstances that trigger our fear and stress. That’s powerful, life-changing knowledge!

As business owners, it’s easy to let fear and doubt slow us down. But the knowledge that letting a fearful frame of mind take over is the very thing that stops us from being successful, is mind blowing. My philosophy for many years has been, “Fear is just a thought; it would be a shame to let a thought – a vapor – be the thing that stops me.” Stop for a second, let that sink in.

Now is the time to decide. Will you let a vapor stop you?

New Thinking, New Results

This is the time of year we begin wrapping up the old year and start looking at what we’re going to do differently next. Make this the year you stop letting your unconscious thoughts get in the way of what you want!
